Redesigning UFO's

I was trying to figure out the reasons why I have so many UFO's.  Lack of time?  Lack of interest? Lack of supplies?  Lack of space?  I think each project falls into one of these reasons.

I get to a point where I'm not really happy with the way a project is going, let it hang on the wall or sit on my table for a while, and either get inspired, or put it away and move onto something that does have my juices flowing.  The following project falls under that category....

I started this one before the Halloween of 2009.  To me it was just lacking "something".  I could have finished it the way I started it, but I just wasn't convinced it was all that it could be concerning the design.

I tried other block combinations.....

That's the fun about half square triangles...very versatile.  I think I am actually going to go with some of these block variations in the final quilt.

I mentioned in my last post that I was inspired by a wall hanging I saw in the current APQ Sampler magazine.  I cannibalized an old McCall's pattern and am going to use this as the center of the quilt.....

I'm trying to decide what to put next to the cat...pumpkin? spider web? or what?  Not sure yet.  The background is pieced from the left overs of the orange for the previous work.

I think the project will end up a lot better than the original idea.  Maybe letting a project be a UFO for a while can be a good thing.  But, there are those projects that sit around and never got interesting again.  Life is too short to work on things that you know just aren't going to "pop", or satisfy that creative bend.  Does anyone else feel this way??

I have a few more projects that need to be reevaluated, but I am going to try and get this one at least into a top before I move on to another one.

Happy Quilting!!

I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out what should go next to the cat, but everything I think of would be out of proportion to the cat...a gnarled tree would be cool, or an old cemetery-ish fence gate, but there's that proportion issue...

As for the first batch of half square triangles...how about using your original layout and appliqueing something over that too? Something viney and green might look cool...maybe a wreath-ish circle?

Whatever you choose, I'm sure the finished project will look great! For both projects.

I know what you mean. I am doing the Pat Sloan UFO busting challenge and I am taking a long look at some of my UFOs. I have a lot of unquilted tops, some I like, some not so much. So I am going to get rid of some tops and just work the projects I still like.
I like the new project. Maybe a pumpkin would work by the cat.
I like your original layout with the HST. I also like the star with the HST in the center.
You will figure it out. You are very creative.

I rather liked the original layout so it just goes to show that folks like different things. Either way - fantastic colours. Ann :-)
