A Night of Being a Long Distance Momma

So, I had all my quilty stuff set up and ready to go....then I start getting phone calls over this.....

That's a four inch screw embedded an inch into my son's foot.....

There's the X-ray.  It went between his big toe and the one next to it.  The doctor at the ER had to get a screwdriver and literally unscrew it from his foot!!!

Storyline...

I get home from taking the hubby to work (30 miles each direction) so I can have the truck to get to work myself at o' dark thirty this coming morning.  I'm sitting out on the balcony talking with my daughter when I get this phone call from a number I don't recognize.  Okay...if it's important, they will leave a message.
And he did....
"Mom, I stepped on a screw and it's stuck in my foot through my shoe.  I can't find my dad or his girlfriend.  Call me."
So I immediately call back the number and his step-sister of sorts answers.  They were headed over to the local fire department to find out what they should do.  I call the fire department, and they said they looked at it and he needs to go to a hospital to have it removed.  They tried to pull it out, but couldn't...too much pain. They had no idea how far in it actually was.

So....I call the kids back and tell them I am calling the in-laws to set up a ride to the hospital.  Call the in-laws. Brother in law is grabbing keys and heading to fire department.  I call the hospital.  Explain what's happening and that the boy is en route.
Boy shows up at hospital.  I get call from ER.  "We need permission to treat."  You've got it.  Then the next call (of course) is billing information.  Whatever...just fix the kid.
That's when the son-in-law sent me the pictures.
Meanwhile...the boy's dad is still nowhere to be found.  I won't even get into that one.
Boy gets checked out and calls me.  Says the nurse was hot, the foot hurts, and oh, did I mention the nurse was hot?  That's a teenage boy for ya;)
No stitches, just some antibiotics, a tetanus shot, and some bandaging.  Told him to go home and get some rest.

In the middle of all this, I did some piecing....

This just proves to me that quilting truly is a stress reliever!!  Notice the deviation from the pattern with the little star in the middle of the new green and brown block?  Yep, that's how I like it;)

Now that I know the boy is going to be okay, it's time for me to go to bed.  I have to be up before the crack of dawn, and I don't fair well without sleep;)

Happy Quilting, and Happy Mommy'ing to all;)

Wow! That is some x-ray! I can't believe the screw ended up that far in his foot. He probably can't wait to show it off though. (Gotta love teenage mentality!)

I love the star in the middle of the green and brow block. It really sets it off!

That's one giant screw! Thank heavens it missed the bones. So, was the nurse hot or what? I do like that little star hiding in the block. Neat! Ann :-)

So, how the hell did he manage to do that? And through his shoe too?

First off...EWWWW!

Second: how did they get his shoe off with the screw in his foot? (Technicalities, you know!)

Third: glad he's okay and had a hot nurse to distract him.

Last (and most important): I love the star in the middle of the block! Quilting is a good distraction, I agree.

Leave it to kids (especially teenagers) to keep life interesting!! I'm glad everything turned out okay. A screw in the foot is bad enough, but worse things could happen - we won't go there.

Being a long diatance mom at this point would be OK with me. I wouldn't want to see the screw in the foot in person, there is a reason I didn't want to be a nurse! Glad everything is OK now. Kids can keep your life intersting, no matter their age!

Glad you had the quilting to help with your stress. The blocks look great, I like the little star in the middle of the block.

They had to numb up his foot and cut the shoe off. He was walking through rocks and bushes. The screw must have tilted up at that perfect moment as he stepped on a rock or something.
Yeah, I can be a mom...never a nurse!!

Ow! Owww! Ow! 'Nuff said. I'm glad he's OK, and that you were able to help long-distance.

I love the deviation from the pattern. It's a great way to leave your mark on the quilt - and this particular one will have a very interesting memory to go with it!

Sorry about your son's foot. That kinda made my foot hurt. I am sure he will get a lot of attention with that story, oh and the hot nurse. I figure if they notice the hot nurse, it isn't a critical injury. LOL

Glad you got him through it long distance. Glad you had stuff ready to just sew. (I like your little star).

To begin with, I like the little star in your block too! Will you be adding more in the other colors?
I'd bet your son said "My goodness" when he stepped on that screw! *yeah, right! Giggle!*
Crazy things do happen with kids! This may not be the time or place, but I haven't told a long crazy story in a long time. I'm reminded of a thin little boy about 8-9 years old who got his rear end hung in the commode rim at his home; somehow he slid down, folded up, while sitting there. (I was working at the fire dept. at the time.) The firemen had to saw the rim apart to get him out! Just imagine his embarrassment and fear as they worked to free him! What a tale he will have to tell his grandkids!
I'm sure your grandson will come up with a wild story too about his experience and that hot nurse. I hope they gave him the screw to keep. That film is incredible! Hope he will be okay! ---"Love"
