It's been a long time since I made a garment...had to refresh the clothing construction skills. I like making this stuff, but alot of times the patterns are terrible. I had to do alot of extra steps to make it a "finished" garment....finishing seams, extra manipulation, extra embellisment, etc. I wouldn't pay the full asking price on most of the patterns they offer nowadays. Vogue, maybe, the rest....no.
I cut out one for my mom too. I can say that out loud here because she doesn't have a computer yet. I think she will enjoy one;) I didn't realize until the recent visits just how many of my projects she has gotten over the years. She treasures them, so why not keep it up??;)
On another note.... I got tired of trying to stuff the pattern back in the envelope it came in, so I went the ziploc route...
Why didn't I think of these years ago?? I don't know if it's just me, or have the pattern company's thinned out the pattern papers??? Either way, I was afraid of ripping them to shreds. Problem solved.
It's back to the sewing table. I'm going to get the other apron finished and get something else going...not sure what.

Cute apron! I agree with you on modern pattern content. The pattern companies have dumbed things down so much that lots of the construction details are just gone. Not a change for the better, I'm afraid. Luckily, I have a number of old sewing books from the 60's and 70's that still have all those instructions. If you ever need clarification on construction, let me know. I will be more than happy to look something up for you.

I love the apron, though my problems of cooking dirtiness usually happen above the waist...and usually manage to outmaneuver the aprons I wear anyways! And I love the idea of putting the pattern in a Ziploc...why didn't I think of that either? I don't really do garment sewing (no matter how dumbed-down you say those patterns are, I still can't figure out which color is the front of fabric, which is the back and what all those dotted, dashed and broken lines mean!), but I've got a few patterns spilling out of their envelopes and this will come in handy. Thanks!
Your apron is very cute! I like the black and white with the little splash of lime, it really pops. I only buy patterns when they are on sale for $.99. Of course they were $.50 when I was growing up and learning to sew. I don't like that they put several different sizes in one pattern, either. There are so many cutting lines it is hard to follow. The apron pattern is a cute one. The ziploc idea is a good one.
Cute apron. I always think I should make some aprons when I see a cute one and then the thought passes. LOL I need to make some because I always et something on me when I cook. Luckily, I don't cook often now that DD#2 is back at school.
Your observations are spot on. If one didn't have a good idea of how to construct a garment I'd think one might struggle with today's thin pattern instructions. Like the thin tissue on which they are printed. I have ironed them onto interfacing to stabilise them. It's a super apron and I love the fabric! Cheers, Ann :-)
