Working on the UFO pile

I'm still working on getting out of the "square" rut, but I have some tops that need to become quilts.  I put this one together a few years back.  Had this random pile of pieces and parts of various fabrics...denim, flannel, shirting, etc.  I paid no mind to lining anything up.  I think it was an exercise in just accepting whatever happened with it.

I pulled it out of the pile of UFO's last week.  I think it would be a great fishing quilt.  Something to throw down on the banks of a lake and relax on.  Have a picnic.  And not worry about ruining something.  Toss it in the wash, and then head out with it the next time.

This is going to be the other side of the quilt.  I had originally purchased this fun fabric to make my husband a pair of boxer shorts.  Never got around to it.  Found it again and decided to use it with the fishing quilt.  The blue is denim.  I don't usually combine different fabric weights, but I am just keeping with the original plot of this one.  I think I have some more flannel somewhere I can use to make it bigger.  I figure it will be big enough for both of us to sit on.

I've been home now from the job for just over a month.  I haven't started looking for work.  Still working on getting myself back together physically and spiritually.  I've been writing, canning, blogging, gardening.  Spending some very good quality time with my husband and helping my mother out.  I've been able to talk with friends and family.  I didn't realize just how much I was giving to this last job.  But then again, maybe I did realize it and that's why I quit.

Anyway....
On that note, It's Friday and Payday:)  I think I will pull out a couple of steaks from the freezer for dinner.  Maybe do some fishing this weekend.

Happy Quilting to All!!

I think your idea of a "fishing" quilt is a great idea; I like the thought that you won't have to worry if it gets dirty. I'm sure my son who is quite a fisherman would love to have a quilt he could really "use" without upsetting me. On the other hand it really is a nice scrappy quilt, and will be great for fun picnics etc., or your hubby's man cave. Enjoy!! ---"Love"

Using up bits of fabric like that is a great idea. It is a fun quilt that can really be used without worrying about it. The backing fabric is really cute, too. Have fun with it!

That's going to be a super quilt for fishing and picnics. It's good too, to finish up a UFO and fabric from the stash. Sounds like your old job was taking it's toll. Good for you that you have stepped back and are focusing on your own health and well-being.

I think the quilt is great. So many quilts from the past paid no mind to fabric weights, matching points and even using the same prints throughout, so when did we get this notion that everything had to be so overly matchy? I'll admit I'm a matchy-matchy person a lot of the time, but the more I see and read, the more I realize it's okay to just go with whatever you have. That's how it used to be and we regard those old quilts that survived as pieces of art, so who's to say ours won't be just as valueable in 100 years, assuming they survive the picnics and fishing trips!

I'm happy to hear you're doing well without the job. It made me stop and think about all that my job takes from me. It's more than just the hours I'm gone from home. A lot more. But I'm still screwing up the courage to really dig in an look for something else (budgetary concerns say I still need to earn some $$)...and convincing myself that sometimes the unknown IS better than the known...
